The Religious Society of Friends ( Quakers )

350th Anniversary.

The year 2002 saw not only the Queen’s 50th anniversary, but also the 350th anniversary of the Religious Society of Friends ( Quakers ) whose founder, George Fox, preached at Firbank Fell in 1652. From that early beginning up to the present time the world has learned little from their peaceable ways.

They walk through the world cheerfully seeking that of God in everyone. They try to live in a manner that takes away the occasion of war. Where conflict is found they do what they can to bring about reconciliation, facilitating courses in mediation and furthering international understanding. They have done this in Rwanda, Kosovo, Ireland and the Middle East to name but a few trouble spots.

America’s response to September 11th has slaughtered more innocent civilians than were killed in the twin towers that terrible day. It may have created more future terrorists and dispersed those left alive, after the bombing, to the far corners of the world to plan ever more deadly strikes.

If all this makes you feel hopeless and despondent then it is time for you to discover, for yourself, another way; the Quaker way of dealing with conflict.

See how a faith that is simple, modern and relevant can give meaning and hope to your life in a world of chaos.

Did you see the Quaker Show Kit which came to Stratford town for the June bank holiday, 2002 ? This photograph shows that we were in front of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. Left to right are seen Friends Robert Sharrock, Dorothea Abbott, Barbara Sharrock and Ann McNiell.
